About GROOL
The Gananoque Real Old Old-Timers Hockey League (GROOL) is a senior's recreational hockey group that was started in year 2000 by a group of seniors playing shinny / pickup hockey in Gananoque. The pioneers of this group, shown on the players list are the players who started what we have today.
The seniors play on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Gananoque Recreation Center from 12N to 1pm on a pay as you play basis. The group is made up with seniors of all ages, starting at 55+ and range to over 80yrs of age. It is a non contact game with no slap shots with the mission statement of, 'let the puck do the skating'.
The GROOL team, is selected from these seniors to play friendship games with local towns and a CAN/AM series with Syracuse N.Y.
The CAN/AM series is played for the Graham Sharman Memorial Cup in memory of Graham who was originally from Montreal, moved to Gananoque, then to Geneva N.Y. where he owned the Live Oaks Golf Course. Graham passed away in the summer of 2008 at the age of 71 and has a brother Don who still resides in the township.
Westport, Smith Falls, Athens & Brockville currently are towns that participate in friendship games. These games are played in their respective arena's and are usually done in a home and home format.
